Reading BINGO

For the past two weeks, students at Perkins have been reading to no end. Reading BINGO was an idea develop by the school librarian, Miriam Sayre, to help promote reading throughout the school. Kids have various different types of books and stories they must read in order to complete the BINGO card. They may fill up five consecutive squares in any direction to win a reading medal, or if they’re feeling extra ambitious, may fill up the entire card to win an ice cream party for their class.

Many students have already received their medals and are trying for more. This is a wonderful opportunity for kids to have fun while reading, along with adding an extra incentive to complete the BINGO card. Miriam has shared stories of whole classrooms clapping for a student while receiving his/her medal, accompanied by a huge smile that stretched across their face. It has especially been beneficial to the ELL students, who despite their language barrier, are turing in BINGO cards every day. Numerous students have expressed to their teachers how happy they are with themselves for reading so much, which is the ultimate goal of this idea. Enough credit cannot be given to Miriam for this wonderful idea and how valuable this experience has been for the students. Thank you so much, Miriam!!!!
