Sneak Peak at Kindergarten

Its a beautiful day at Perkins Academy. Outside it’s sunny and 65 degrees. Inside you will find education at its best.  I begin my walkthroughs in Mrs. Brewer’s Kindergarten class.  when I amber into the room, I witness 26 beautiful little boys and girls mesmerized by the new technology and their animated teacher. Students are so excited they have a hard time containing their enthusiasm. Mrs. Brewer is standing at the white board counting the numbers 1-6 while her students repeat the numbers. Hands are now in the air. I hear Mrs. Brewer say, “Curl around and curl it up.”  Learning is fun!

As I walk into Mrs. Lundy’s room the children turn and greet me with a loud “HELLO MR. KOSS!” Again, I manage to disrupt her  classroom. I quietly scrunch down-find a small seat and hope they don’t notice me. I sit and observe how focused they become on the learning at hand. A student stands and begins to point to a poem that is written on an anchor chart. Student break into song and rap to a poem called Trick or Treater. What a sight to see. If only our parents could see the learning going on at Perkins.

I end my walkthroughs in Mrs. Jackman’s radiant classroom. She is reading an interesting novel titled Five Little Pumpkins. Her students all sitting on the carpet-criss-cross applesauce-waiting in profound anticipation for her to begin the story. I hear her begin by pointing to the front and back of the book-just in case they forgot. She also teaches them that the pictures are made by an illustrator.  Students can’t contain themselves. They must ask, “What is an illustrator?” Calmly, she looks-waits and then reiterates that an illustrator is a person that helps the author draw the pictures. The reading finally begins. Students become silent. They are mesmerized by each word she speaks from the book. So was I.
