Cultural Relevance
Tuesday night marked the second annual Culture Night at Perkins. The cafeteria, gym, music room, library, and one kindergarten classroom were transformed into the countries of Bosnia, Mexico, Kenya, Egypt, and Tai Dam for the night. Students were given a “passport” that was printed in a certain color, and then had the schedule of events listed. Each color represented a different “flight” to the different countries. Students were given samples of Mexican candies and dances, Bosnian coffee, Egyptian henna tattoos, African story telling, and Tai Dam crafts. It was a great night to celebrate the diversity of Perkins, which is one of the highest in the district. Culture night also allowed students to catch a glimpse of how some of their classmates live, or what their customs are like. Teaching these notions to our students will only allow them to become better citizens by allowing them to learn about other cultures, and being exposed to something that is different than what they are used to. A HUGE thank you goes out to the organizers of the event Jeni Pulliam and Nela Blanco. Without them, none of this would have been possible!
