I have been working for DMPS as a Bilingual Community Worker since 2007. I was born in Costa Rica and moved to Iowa in 1994 following my mom’s transfer to Pioneer Hi-Bred in Johnston Iowa. My primary language is Spanish but I am also fluent in English. I love to travel and learn as much as I can from all of the different countries our students are from. In my free time I enjoy spending time with my family and friends, cooking, gardening and taking our dogs for walks.
Bilingual Family Liaison
My adventure with Des Moines Public Schools began in 2001 as a Special Education Associate at Hanawalt Elementary. I have also worked as an associate with STEP and Edmunds Elementary. I enjoy being a part of the great Perkins Elementary community as a Special Education Associate helping the students learn and thrive. My time away from Perkins Elementary is spent catching up on my reading for my latest book club selection, movies, and having good times with my family and friends.
Special Education Associate
I have been a speech language pathologist (SLP) in the Des Moines School District since the 2018-2019 school year, and have been a school-based SLP since 2012. My passion for helping all students increase their communication skills, advocating for those who need communication support, and working with amazing teachers and staff in the buildings I serve has kept me continually wanting to learn and grow. It has been a joy to join the Perkins family! Outside of school I enjoy being with my family, exploring outdoors or going for long walks, and reading.
Hi! My name is Melissa Keller and I am the school nurse at Perkins. I love our school and caring for our students! This is my fifth year with DMPS and my 18th year as a nurse. I previously worked at ChildServe, in the hospital setting as a float nurse for 3 years and a Labor and Delivery nurse for 10 years. My husband and our three kids live in the Perkins district as well, so we are Perkins Penguins through and through! Our oldest son will be in 7th grade at Merrill and our daughter will be in 6th grade at Merrill. Our youngest son will be a 2nd grader at Perkins. I love being a school nurse and I will take good care of your kids while they are at school!
