I have been working for DMPS as a Bilingual Community Worker since 2007. I was born in Costa Rica and moved to Iowa in 1994 following my mom’s transfer to Pioneer Hi-Bred in Johnston Iowa. My primary language is Spanish but I am also fluent in English. I love to travel and learn as much as I can from all of the different countries our students are from. In my free time I enjoy spending time with my family and friends, cooking, gardening and taking our dogs for walks.

I obtained my Master’s in Education with reading, math, and social science endorsements from Drake University in May 2003. I was a substitute teacher with Des Moines Public Schools for one year following graduation. I have taught first grade ever since, first at Garton and then at Perkins.
I am married and have two daughters and four wonderful grandchildren. I’ve lived in Texas, Pennsylvania, Alabama, California, Georgia, South Carolina, and Indiana. I also lived in Germany for 5 ½ years. In my spare time I love to travel, take photographs, garden, and read.
My adventure with Des Moines Public Schools began in 2001 as a Special Education Associate at Hanawalt Elementary. I have also worked as an associate with STEP and Edmunds Elementary. I enjoy being a part of the great Perkins Elementary community as a Special Education Associate helping the students learn and thrive. My time away from Perkins Elementary is spent catching up on my reading for my latest book club selection, movies, and having good times with my family and friends.
Special Education Associate
This will be my second year teaching 5th grade in the Des Moines Public School District, but my first year teaching at Perkins. I recently graduated from the University of Northern Iowa in 2018 with a major in elementary education and a minor in mathematics. When I am not teaching, I enjoy spending time with my family, watching football (go Vikings & Hawkeyes), staying active (swimming, biking, running, hiking, walking), cooking, baking, and playing with my dog. I am looking forward to my first year here at Perkins Elementary School and am excited to watch all of my students grow!
My name is Sarah Egge and I am the speech and language pathologist at Perkins Elementary. I also serve other schools within the Des Moines School District. I am from the very far west Chicago suburbs and graduated from Eastern Illinois University and went to University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point for graduate school. After graduating, I worked in the schools in Austin, Texas for 6 years. After that time, my husband and I decided we wanted to move back to the friendliest region of the country so we returned to the Midwest and landed in Des Moines. I’m so grateful to have been welcomed into the Perkins family and have had great joy in working with all the Penguins here.
Hi! My name is Melissa Keller and I am the school nurse at Perkins. I love our school and caring for our students! This is my fourth year with DMPS and my 17th year as a nurse. My husband and our three kids live in the Perkins district as well, so we are Perkins Penguins through and through! Our oldest son will be in 6th grade at Merrill this year. Our daughter will be a 5th grader and our youngest son will be a 1st grader at Perkins. I love being a school nurse and I will take good care of your kids while they are at school!
I was a school teacher for 11 years in Mesquite ISD, (Dallas-Fort Worth, TX Metroplex). I love to play and work with kids. Last year, I was a school therapist at Samuelson Elementary School and this year I will start as school counselor here. I studied my counseling masters degree at Texas A&M University – Commerce from 2014-2017. I am very excited to start my new career here at Perkins Elementary.
